ADMINISTRATION BUILDING OF FORESTS OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Architectural competition for construction of Czech Forest Administration Regional Directorate (Lesy ČR) in Zlín. The structure is situated as a response to the complex terrain configuration on the site. The land designed for the construction of the Regional Directorate building in Zlín rises steeply to its southeast narrow end and is densely forested. The building site is also the breaking line between the city development and the forests surrounding the city of Zlín. The terrain configuration creates an "amphitheatre" in the closest place on the plot and descends slowly towards Březnická street. It is on this breaking line that the building is designed. Thanks to this solution, the building becomes the transition between the steep land section and its comfortable walking area. The building also becomes the transition from the city structure to the countryside. The Regional Directorate building is designed with maximum possible use of wooden elements. The building concept is a presentation of wood in construction. This approach is reflected in the exterior and interior, the two integral parts of a complex structure. The building façade includes two main sections: parterre glazing and wooden cladding. The glass section raises the building, makes it lighter and creates contrast. The overall mass of the building is divided into sections and is not lost in monotony. Monotony in the building expression is also suppressed by a relief on the wooden cladding. This principle is based on the forest archetype as an inseparable part and the primary feature of the Czech Forest Administration company. The relief on the building surface plays with light and shades and changes the building’s appearance through the course of the day. It gives the building plasticity and constant originality.
