VISITOR AND EDUCATIONAL CENTRE

Architectural competition for construction of Education and Visitor Centre Podhůra, Czech republic. There are several contrasts coming together in the form and expression of the centre. The opposition of tree crowns and sharp rocks. The distinction between natural landscape and inhabited areas, between the verticality of a forest and the horizontality of fields. The building is standing on the border of these contrasts and represents a sort of a blending between them. The crowns of the trees growing in an adjoining forest differ in height and width. The roofs of the houses in the surrounding villages also vary, mostly taking on the form of a saddle roof. This shape can be in a simplified form drawn as a broken line circling every tree crown, or every house roof. It was this contour line that has become one of the main themes defining the very concept of the centre. Varying height breaks down the mass of the building and determines the function and purpose of the rooms located behind each of the gables. With the roof ridges rising the clearance of the rooms is also increasing. The most important areas of the centre are situated under the tallest roof points. The concept of the facade amplifies the idea of intertwining the centre with the surrounding landscape. The crowns and branches of all trees blend together and gradually become thicker and thicker: from individual trunks, through first groups of branches to full crowns. This logic is simplified on the facade of the houses, and it is embodied in the vertical wooden facing with planks jutting out. Planks of different lengths jut out and gradually thicken the surface of the facade until they finally form the standing seam roofing. The shadows cast by the planks jutting out underline this principle and provide the facade with a natural, lively changeability. With the sun moving in the course of a day and a year, the shadow being cast on the facade is turning and changing its length and intensity.
