WELLNESS CENTRUM

A former stone quarry in the city district of Brno-Komín lies on the borderline between city and countryside. Such demarcation from city structures offers comfortable and fast access to the city centre and direct contact with nature, fundamental for this location. Numerous leisure time options, such as the Brno Reservoir, zoological garden, the Veveří castle, game preserve, the Baba natural park and others determine the use of the former stone quarry for leisure activities, sports and relaxation. The landscape topography gives this place a unique character and expression. Stone walls, as crude as they are by nature, are an intimate and meditation site. I decided to re-open this artificially created space for everybody to come and surrender to the power of genia loci. To this end, I selected the wellness centre function, a facility with the primary function of restoring the visitor’s body, soul and mind in a place remote from the everyday rush and noise of city life. It is in a place designed for rest and relaxation. The geometric layout, play with light and shades on “broken” surfaces and stone cracks and stone colour became the distinctive features of the building. The building breaks and runs around the north foot of the stone quarry, grows and sinks with the terrain, opens and closes. The bottom level is the entrance and visitor area. The entire higher level is used for the wellness centre functions: swimming hall, specific swimming pools, saunas, relaxation zones, massages and outdoor terraces. The height difference prevents direct visual contact and blocks the noise from the nearby road. The swimming pool section closes gradually from the main hall towards the saunas and creates private and more intimate space. Copper façade sheets evoke, through their colour and perforation which copy the stone texture behind the building, rocks and replace the view of the slopes behind the building.
